The Schererville Police Explorers Post #911 is made up of young men and women between the ages of 16 and 21 who join from all over Lake County, IN. The program members (Explorers) join because of their shared interest in learning about Law Enforcement and how police services are delivered.

The program is geared towards educating career-oriented teens and young adults, interested in law enforcement, about the day-to-day operations of police work. During scheduled meetings Explorers have the opportunity to learn about police work and how police department operates by participating in special training and activities.

By attending meetings Explorers also acumulate training hours, which in turn gives them the opportunity to participate in the ride-a-long program. Explorers can then ride and interact with on duty officers while they respond to calls and patrol the community. This gives them the opportunity to see for themselves if this is truely the career choice for them. Through the program Explorers become aware of the challenges there are within the law enforcement field and the skills required to be a police officer.

In addition to gaining this knowledge Explorers can also participate in local special events and festivals working side by side with police officers while assisting them with traffic and crowd control and maintaining order.

Note: Although the Explorer Program is law enforcement oriented, Explorers are volunteers and do not serve as police employees, sworn or civilian.
